Woman With Almost 6,000 Tumors Just Wants To Be Loved And Accepted For Who She Is
Skin conditions can be incredibly hard to treat, and because our skin is so visible, those conditions can also draw unwanted attention.
Libby Huffer has been living with Neurofibromatosis Type 1 since she was five years old. When she was a teenager, bumps erupted all over her body, and cruel children called her names like “lizard-breath.” When she was pregnant with her daughter in 1993, the hormones in her body made her condition much worse, and the tumors began to cover her whole body. Now there are more than 5,500, and they can grow wherever she has nerve endings.
Now Huffer is speaking out about what it feels like when people point and stare at her.
“I tell children that I’ve been kissed by angels and they don’t say anything, but most adults don’t know what the condition is so I have to explain it.”
