dnata reduces 650 tons of carbon per year with refrigeration technology from Singapore

DNA, A leading global provider of airline and travel services, will save at least 650 metric tons of carbon and 1.5 million kilowatt hours (kwH) of electricity per year after installing innovative new technology at its Changi Airport facility. Singapore (SIN).

The introduction of cooling as a service (CaaS) provides chilled water and air conditioning through a reliable, efficient and sustainable solution. Provided by supplier kaer, CaaS was deployed at dnata Singapore in January 2022 to provide cold water and air to its cargo, catering and support facilities. Under the CaaS model, Kaer retrofitted the cooling systems serving the two facilities with high-efficiency, low-global-warming-potential (GWP) technology and has implemented its suite of data mining, machine learning, and carbon monitoring software. .

This has resulted in a 54% reduction in energy consumption at dnata’s charging base and a 35% reduction in its catering and support offices. The technology also enables real-time monitoring and reporting of service levels, as well as energy use and carbon emissions for ESG (environmental, social and governance) reporting.

Carbon savings of 650 metric tons each year is equivalent to the greenhouse gas emissions of 530 gasoline cars for one year, or more than six million miles (9.65 million kilometers) driven by the average gasoline car . It is also equivalent to the carbon dioxide emissions from the electricity use of 464 average households over a year.

DNAThe Singapore facility was already benefiting from sustainable technology through the use of a rooftop power plant consisting of 6,500 individual solar panels, generating more than 4,300 megawatt hours of green energy each year. This allowed dnata to reduce its electricity-related carbon emissions by 20%. The energy savings achieved with the new cooling systems are equivalent to installing 2,400 additional solar panels on roofs.

DNA recently announced that it was on track to reduce its carbon footprint and landfill waste by 50% by 2030 as part of its eight-year green operations strategy. Previously, the company committed $100 million to implement green technologies and initiatives across its businesses globally to achieve its strategic goals. The company’s recent key initiatives include significant and ongoing investment in infrastructure, greenfield support solutions and process improvement.

DNA Currently serving more than 50 airlines at Singapore Changi Airport (SIN) with a team of 1,500 aviation professionals, managing more than 15,000 flights, providing more than 3.75 million meals and moving more than 250,000 tonnes of load per year.
